What to Wear For Your Family Photos

Ever wondered what your family should wear for your professional photoshoot? Dressing the whole fam can be quite the task so here are some simple guidelines to help you choose something that will make your photos look great for years to come.

Coordinate Colors

Color coordination is a must! Having a theme or simple color family to work from will help everyone look like they belong together. Try to avoid EXACT matches for everyone, and instead decide on a small color palette that each family member can choose from.

Save the Neon for Your Nighttime Jog

Generally speaking, muted or lighter colors are going to look better. Hot pink, bright red, and neon green are going to cast a lot of color back on your skin, giving you an unnatural complexion, while soft colors and neutrals will keep your skin looking great! Harsh colors will also distract from your faces when people look at the photos.

KEEP the Location in Mind

Take a moment to consider where you’ll be getting your photos taken. If you’re going to be outside in front of a bunch of bright green trees, a bright green shirt might become camouflage.. and an orange shirt might be too much of a contrast. Cooler tones, darker shades of green, and neutrals may be the way to go. You’ll also want to choose appropriate footwear (ask your photographer if you’ll be doing any photos involving movement, think about the terrain on the way to the photoshoot location, etc).

Choose patterns carefully

This may sound silly, but your family is the star of your family photos! Don’t let loud or busy patterns distract from your smiling faces. Also try to avoid very small or fine patterns, stripes, and checks that can sometimes look weird on camera.

Layers and Accessories!

Don’t underestimate the power of layers and accessories in your wardrobe. Adding a scarf, jacket, or sweater can take your outfit to the next level, and provide options for different looks throughout the session. Think through your accessories too - do you want the Apple Watch on or off? Does someone have a signature hat you’d prefer they leave at home, or some jewelry they rarely wear that would be the perfect fit? Shoes can also be a forgotten accessory, and you’ll want to make sure everyone has on a pair of shoes that fit the vibe and color scheme!

Comfort is Key

It’s easy to get caught up in style when choosing outfits for family photos, so make sure to keep comfort in mind too! When your family is comfortable they’ll be relaxed, happier, and good moods will last longer during the photoshoot. Make sure everyone has clothes that fit them well and allow them to move and breathe.

Let the weather and season influence you

No matter what time of year you plan your photoshoot, you’ll want to check the weather and coordinate with the calendar! Pastels are great for spring/easter, warm-tone flannels look great in the fall, and if it’s the dead of winter.. I’m not sure why we’re taking photos but bundle up!! If you’re freezing or melting, the photos will reflect your discomfort and your family may get impatient. If it’s a particularly windy day, those with long hair may want to consider an up-do.

We know that choosing outfits for your whole family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Keep it simple and remember that at the end of the day, what’s most important is all of you being together, making memories, and capturing your love for one another.
